absolutely no joke, colgate is the best anti-sunburn ointment on the market. I am an incredibly fair skinned guy, went to destin when i was like 13, used no sunscreen, was out all day on the beach. Got so sunburned it made me begin vomiting and shivering. I tried putting tubes of Aloe Vera in the freezer, this felt good but only lasted for maybe 20 minutes then i had to reapply. I heard about the colgate remedy (I assume other tooth pastes work as well), put some on my arms and neck, and literally only had to reapply maybe once a day. It makes you smell funny, but oh my god is it soothing.

bathe your sunburn in baking soda, it works well, mix it with a little water and pat it on. you may also take about 1/4 of a box and put it in tepid (body temp, not hot) bath water.

Aloe Vera gel has always worked for me. I don't think I could take the pain of rubbing on toothpaste. I try not to get too much sun, but if I do I might try this.
