My dad has been a smoker for more than 20 years. Me and myolder sister have been asking him to quit our whole lives. He has attemptedmultiple times but no luck. He thought he tried everything from quitting coldturkey, to the patch. Every time we thought he was doing really well, he wouldgive in and have a cigarette. That one cigarette turned into many more monthsof smoking till he would attempt to quit again. Smoking became a touchy subject for him. If we mentioned it,I could tell he was embarrassed and change the subject. You could see on hisface how badly he wanted to quit. He knew he was missing out on things. Everyweekend us girls and my mom, who quit smoking when we were children, go to themovies. My dad always turned down the invitation to join because he knew it wastoo hard to sit for two hours without being able to smoke. He was seeing lessand less of his family because none of us wanted to go into his office becauseit was filled with cigarette smoke. With my sister’s graduation coming up, I think my dadrealized how time was flashing by and it was time for a change. He discovered anew device to help him quit smoking; the electronic cigarette. This device is not a real cigarette, it only has nicotine in it;not the other additives, like tar. Plus is does not produce smoke, it releaseswater vapor, making secondhand smoke nonexistent. My dad has been smoking this for about a month and a halfnow and already I have noticed huge differences in everyday life. The office, for instance, it is not only bearable, but enjoyable. Me and my sister areactually sitting in there for a long period of time, talking to him. I alsohave noticed him going out more, like going to the grocery store or taking mysister somewhere. From smoking over a pack a day, my dad is only smoking 3-4cigarettes a day. He says he is only doing that because he already had boughtthe cigarettes and as soon as they are gone he is only going to smoke the electronic cigarette. My dad had a carton and a half when he first started, and todayhe still has half a carton. If he was continuing to smoke cigarettes like he was,he would have been out and buying more 3 weeks ago. That is outstanding. Overall, my dad is going to be there at my wedding, and mychildren’s first day of school, and many other special moments that he wouldmiss if he was still filling his lungs with such toxins. I am extremely proud ofhow well he is doing and I can’t be happier.
