Not all call centers are created equal and not all call
center jobs may be exactly what you are looking for. Before you decide to apply at any call center
there are a few things you should know about working in a call center that may
make you change your mind about your choice of professions. Most of the people who call in are in need of
your help, and are therefore very nice and congenial. Then there are those people who call just to
let you know how mad they are and there is nothing you will be able to do
except listen to them yell, scream, and cuss for the duration of the call. If you are a person who takes things
personally then these calls could get you upset to the point that you won’t be
able to function very well for the rest of the day. Not only will it affect the way you function
but it will affect your attitude towards you job, the company, and your general
attitude for everything in your life. If
you are capable of keeping the call separate from your personal feelings that will
be the only way to maintain your sanity.
Remember when you are looking for your call center job that
there are many different types of call centers and each may have different jobs
within them. In the call center I work
at we have different specialty teams that take different types of calls. The mass of the call center takes inbound
billing and general questions from customers.
Then we have a team that deals with technical questions and another that
takes escalations from customers who are upset and want to speak to a
supervisor. We also have a team that
deals with customers who only speak Spanish and still another team who makes
outbound calls to customers. So make
sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you decide to take that
job. There can be a huge difference in
the attitude of a customer who has questions about their bill and feels ripped
off and a customer who needs help figuring out a technical problem. Or possibly worse yet if you are making
outbound calls to someone who may be sleeping or otherwise does not want to be
disturbed.
Really I just want you to make sure that you have a high
tolerance for pain before you decide to look into any call center jobs. One thing that you know for sure will happen
at some point in your career is that you will get a flaming idiot on the line
who will not know when to shut up. They
will attack you personally and call you just about every name in the book. If you don’t think that you can pass this off
as people just being ignorant then maybe working in a call center is not for
you. If you are strong and can leave
work at work then look in your local paper or on an Internet job board for some
very interesting call center jobs.
