Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6 (KJV).
Raised
in a Christian home, I attended church every Sunday until I turned
fifteen or sixteen. At that point, I wanted no more of church or God.
I periodically checked in with God when I encountered trouble, but I kept telling myself I would worry about God later.
At
twenty-three, I went through a rough patch. The people I thought would
always be in my life weren't. My health finally showed signs of wear
from all my years of worry (I joke that I was born worrying). And the
job I thought I could always count on failed me.
I realized that
I needed God. I turned back to Him after a near-death experience. For
me, I knew I had been spared for a reason. So I turned to Him for good.
My mother trained me in the way of God, and later on, I returned to Him.
I
left Him because I had been taught that He was a mean, judgmental God.
Now I know Him as Daddy, as Saviour, as love, peace and joy.
And knowing He loves me makes all the difference. It makes any situation or trial I face that much more bearable.
