“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow” - Melody Beattie, author.
What a nice reminder to take a moment and be thankful for all we have, even when it’s not all we want. We spend so much time and energy striving for more…money, success, respect, love, material possessions…we may forget to look at what we already have.

Imagine a wall of trophies, polished and gleaming with dedications baring your name.
How well are you performing in this game of life?
Are you a team player or an individual performer?
We all have areas where we struggle, but instead of focusing on what you lack, honor your strengths. Your unique qualities have value because there is balance in nature. Yin Yang “describes two opposing and, at the same time, complementary (completing) aspects of any one phenomenon (object or process) or comparison of any two phenomena.” Wikipedia. You may long to be a leader because you consider a leader’s traits admirable or believe leading is the only way to succeed. Maybe you’re like me: loyal and dedicated. Don’t discount these qualities if they make you an excellent follower – a leader can’t lead if there are no followers.
Do you play to win or play to play?
If you only focus on the prize you may miss out on the sheer enjoyment of playing the game. There is nothing wrong with wanting to succeed, but if your only measure of success is monetary gain, it may be time to reevaluate. There are countless stories of individuals with massive wealth who are miserable, drug addicted and self destructive. It’s like a kid who longs for a toy, only to discard it as worthless junk once he has it. He is focused on obtaining the toy, not the joy of earning the toy, or playing with the toy. There is joy in earning our rewards – the joy of accomplishment, pride and feeling of worth. Work is a joyful experience, as long as you choose to believe it is.
They don’t’ hand out awards for just showing up.
Are there areas of your life where you could be doing more? I don’t want to receive an honorable mention for motherhood. I want the biggest, best trophy with blinking lights declaring “WORLD’S BEST MOM.” I do my best everyday to earn that title even if it means postponing writing articles, reading a short story or social marketing. Maybe my “Writer Extraordinaire” trophy is dwarfed in comparison but that’s my personal choice.
The real power of gratitude is to focus on what is good right now. We all have achievements we can be proud of. When you start to feel overwhelmed or dissatisfied by the progress you’re making on your goals, tap into these powerful feelings to rejuvenate yourself. No matter what – keep playing the game!
