When the primaries were beginning as an independent voter who really isn't a big fan of politics I was pretty sure I would not be favoring a Republican this year due to the failures of our current President George W Bush. Ironically, my favorite 3 candidates were Obama, Edwards, and McCain out of the whole field and I am shocked and surprised to now see McCain and Obama very likely going to be going head to head. The unfortunate thing for me is the amount of respect I have lost for McCain. Not due to this New York Times story, as far as I'm concerned with that its pure conjecture and unless more is revealed later or some hard evidence shown it won't sway me. I am however very disturbed by McCain's attitude on the Iraq War, and many of his new policies which are a 180 from the policies that I thought made McCain a viable candidate. Most recently McCain changed his view on torture and voted against my views on torture with the whole waterboarding issue. This really surprised me as McCain was tortured himself and he should know we have a responsibility to the world to provide an excellent example. McCain has also changed his views on other issues such as the Bush tax cuts, and abortion. I believe this is an attempt to appease the far right of his party but it disturbs me that this great man has somewhat sold out in my eyes.
I am also not very happy about McCain's most recent attack on Obama about bombing inside of Pakistan to take out Bin Laden or a high level Al Qaeda official. McCain employed a "Clinton trick" distorting a statement and using it to his own benefit. McCain should have seen the country is tired of dirty politics and he needs to run a clean heads up campaign if he hopes to win. In fact, ironically the President told CNN"s Wolf Blitzer in an earlier interview pretty much the exact answer to a question to what Obama's statement. Basically saying if Bin Laden is there, we will strike with or without Pakistan's permission.
But on top of everything, in my recent searching through McCain speeches to see if I could find an example of his usage of the phrase "my friends", I found a disturbing video of McCain joking about actually bombing Iran. It was very disturbing to me how nonchalant he is about this in this video. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive but I'll let you be the judge.
Update: I did find an article giving us a little more information: USA TodayGives us a little more of the view of this video from both sides of the aisle.
