I recently went to the mall with my teenage daughters.  They love the shops that cater to them, with teens behind the counters, loud music and dim lights.  I usually wait in the food court, nursing a coffee from Starbucks and people watching (my favorite pass time!).  On this particular day, I loitered near the entrance of a particularly hip and trendy clothing store and watched the shoppers.  For the most part, they were giggling girls and slouchy boys, but to my dismay I saw several motherly types dressed as though they were 15 again.  Once you leave the teen years behind, you must also leave behind Mini Skirts, Uggs, Roxy Ts, Skinny Jeans and any piece of clothing decorated with skulls.  Oh, unless you have your own rock band or your name is Cher, then go for it.

One observation led to another and I thought of all the other things we outgrow.  Behaviors that helped you succeed in the past may have the opposite result now that you’re older and wiser.

What makes you successful at 30 can kill your career at 40.

At 30 “go it alone” meant you were independent but at 40 it will appear as if you can’t put together a good staff and build their skills.

At 30 controlling and results oriented becomes inflexible, unsocial, and irritable at 40

If you are always being creative and have great conceptual skills, lot of energy in handling multiple tasks – it can look great at 30, but at 40 you lack of attention to detail, are disorganized and can’t be trusted to perform.

If you are brilliant and a driver with very high standards at 30 – great, but at 40 you’re perceived as an arrogant bully, always abrasive and overly ambitious.

At 30 raw talent and high energy made you a superstar, but by 40 you lose your shine.

Pay attention to the feedback you’re getting.  If your behaviors are no longer serving you, it’s time to build better habits.  Unless you’re still dressing like Pink, in which case, it’s time to build a better wardrobe.
