The Niners have the unfortunate luck of not having their high first round draft pick due to the fact they traded it away to the New England Patriots for a bag of Doritos and a few gallons of purified water. The Niners have made a big move on offense, that is coaching-wise, by hiring the often maligned Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator. Martz has had some good teams and offenses in the past but I don't think he will be able to pull any magic. Besides Frank Gore the 49ers offense is full of question marks and the defense is in even worse condition. I hate to say it for any hardcore Niners fans but I see no relief in the Martz hiring and unless they catch lightning in bottle they are going to have another miserable year.
As for their first round draft pick, they do have a late first round pick they have aquired via trade with the Colts. Unfortunately that puts them around 29 for their first pick but perhaps they can get some good value there. The experts are all over the place with this pick but the slim majority is looking at wide receiver for the NIners late first round pick. Early Doucet out of LSU and James Hardy out of Indiana are favored as well as one expert thinking perhaps Macolm Kelly out of Oklahoma. It is not a bad idea to upgrade at receiver as Alex Smith should have a better year as well as Gore and who knows what high powered offense Mike Martz will try to run. Maybe these Niner games might be a little more interesting to watch next year...
Fantasy Top 5
1. Frank Gore RB- Despite being on such a bad team he is one of the few backs who rarely splits carries and gets many receptions making him invaluable in those pesky points per reception leagues.
2. Vernon Davis TE- This tight end continues to play lower than where he is drafted in fantasy leagues but I think this year might be different. The shine of this guy has worn off and if you can get good value maybe pick him up. he has the tools, just needs to put it together.
3. 1st Round Draft Pick WR- Whether its Doucet, Hardy or Kelly I think they immediately have more fantasy value than Arnaz Battle.
4. Arnaz Battle WR- Had a decent year considering all the Niners problems. Not really someone I would be happy starting even on a rough fantasy bye week.
5. Alex Smith QB- Some people think he has the talent to be a great player, I'm not one of them but Smith should be available in the very late rounds and should be the every day starter. Who knows Mike Martz, a new receiver talent, a little wine...maybe this Niners offense might be good next year. Okay probably need a little more wine before seeing that but who knows.
