The hapless Atlanta Falcons were 4-12 last year leaving them only one good facet to their terrible season on and off the field. They will get either the 3rd, 4th, or 5th pick in this next draft depending on a coin toss (I would love to see what coin they are using). But as Michael Vick's dogs are in rehabilitation, things are not looking nearly as good for Vick's old team. Jacksonville's old defensive coordinator Mike Smith has won the lotto and is the new coach for this troubled team. He inherits many angry players but some decent talent. Unfortunately not much talent or leadership behind center which will be a problem again this year. It also looks like they are going to have to cut some players to get to be where they want to be capwise. I hate to say it for any Falcons fans but it looks like they'll be rebuilding longer than Vick is spending behind bars. Vick is also not going to have to pay back his 16 million dollar signing bonus as if things weren't bad enough.
Atlanta has also brought in a new GM Thomas Dimitroff who is from the Patriots organization but seems to be more involved with the scouting department. Besides being from the Patriots he is pretty much an unknown commodity so it will be interesting what he does this off season. It appears either Matt Ryan (QB out of Boston College) or Darren McFadden (RB out of Arkansas) will be their pick this year. The majority of draft experts favor Matt Ryan in this spot. He's not a proven commodity but is definitely high on everyone's draft board. It remains yet to be seen who will be in a worse place this upcoming season: Mike Vick, or Falcon's fans stuck in front of their tv's every Sunday.
Updated 2/16-- Alge Crumpler & Byron Leftwich were cut recently so it looks like rebuilding is definitely on the Falcons mind and looks like Matt Ryan (or Matty Ice as his teamates call him) will be their man. It also looks like Crumpler isn't their #1 fantasy player now but if you're looking for fantasy starters on this team that's not a good sign. Updated 3/17-- Warrick Dunn has also been released perhaps putting the Falcons in the hunt for McFadden.
Update 4/24- The Falcons have traded Dante Hall but have picked up Michael Turner making McFadden unlikely but Matt Ryan very, very likely. Update 4/28- The Falcons as expected took Matt Ryan in the draft and have also drafted Sam Baker (T, USC) to help protect their new investment. 2008 NFL Schedule
